(28 June 2016 – Hong Kong) New World Department Store China Limited (“NWDS” or the “Company”; Hong Kong stock code: 825), one of the largest owners and operators of department stores in Mainland China, hosted the fifth series of “GO GREEN with NWDS” between the 3rd to the 12th of June. The activity’s success was evidenced by the active participation of almost 20,000 customers. This year’s newly added “I am Master Chef · Delicious Low-Carbon Diet” cooking competition became the spotlight of the activity. As an embodiment of low carbon living, over 180 customers signed up and participated in the competition to test design and culinary standards of low carbon dish.
To raise customer participation rates, cooking competitions were newly introduced to this year’s activity with the aim of raising public awareness of reducing carbon emissions in food production and cooking process. In cooperation with the Lanzhou Civilization Office, the event “Be courteous to sanitation workers, lead a low carbon lifestyle” was launched to raise public awareness of environmental protection and to lower the workload of sanitation workers. As “GO GREEN with NWDS” was hosted during the Dragon Boat Festival season, Harbin New World Department Store and Dalian New World Department Store hosted rice dumpling making competitions respectively, where customers used organic ingredients to lower carbon emissions whilst celebrating this traditional festival. Apart from allowing customers to partake in experience-driven activities, multiple stores also hosted the “Chef is Coming to NWDS · Delicious Low-Carbon Diet” cooking demonstration, drawing customers to these stores to view the expert demonstration. In addition, Yanjiao New World Department Store organized an enzyme making workshop teaching customers how to produce environmental friendly enzyme cleanser. Integrated with a healthy lifestyle discussion session, the workshop was received with much enthusiasm by the participants.
In adherence with precedence, all NWDS employees wore green on the “Green Casual Wear Day” and decorated the office with plants as a prelude to the activity. As participating member stores of “Hong Kong Green Day 2016”, NWDS stores rolled out the “Green Rewards GO GO GO” resulting the giving away of over 3,000 small potted plants, reusable shopping bags and other environmental friendly gifts for customers who wore green. The Company’s green power also took over on online platforms via NWDS CSR Weibo which hosted the “NWDS · Go Green Together” retweeting activity. The activity was supported by the retweeting of nearly 12,000 online users. Multiple stores also pushed forward the promotion of the activity through other online social media platforms. An example of such was Hong Kong New World Department Store-Shanghai Hongkou Branch Store’s efforts in uploading pictures of completed dishes from the cooking competitions onto Wechat’s “Moments” and were “liked” by nearly 700 online users. ChengDu New World Department Store and Changsha New World Department Store also shared the activity details on Wechat, which were also received widespread public attention.
Ms. Violet Chan, Assistant General Manager of Corporate Communication and Chairman of Sustainability Steering Committee of NWDS, said, “‘GO GREEN with NWDS’ is one of the many signature nationwide green activities by NWDS. Via these environmental activities, we hope to encourage customers to take baby steps and changes in their lifestyle to greatly improve the situation of the environment. This year, we hosted the newly added ‘I am Master Chef · Delicious Low-Carbon Diet’ cooking competition which successfully promoted the green message of lowering carbon emissions.
