(13 July 2015 – Hong Kong) New World Department Store China Limited (“NWDS” or the “Company”; Hong Kong stock code: 825), one of the largest owners and operators of department stores in Mainland China, organized its second “Volunteer Month” activity in June. With the theme of “NWDS‧Soccer Fever”, various soccer-inspired competitions and games were organized for over 900 under-resourced children in Mainland China. More than 300 NWDS volunteers participated in the activity and contributed over 1,500 service hours.
Sports is beneficial to health and can help develop team spirit, therefore, it is essential to children’s physical and mental development. To provide under-resourced children with the opportunity to stretch and exercise and to echo with soccer training courses the Company provides under “@Dream Sustainable Development Program”, this year’s “Volunteer Month” activity used soccer as the theme. NWDS Volunteer Team partnered with local schools, communities and non-profit organizations to organize many soccer-inspired activities for migrant workers’ children. For example, Dalian New World Department Store co-organized “Soccer Classroom” with Yi He Art Training School to teach children soccer knowledge. Anshan New World Department Store had soccer competitions with children who have hearing difficulties from Tiedong Xin Miao Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation School. Hong Kong office took under-resourced children from The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups to play the most in-trend “bubble soccer”, enabling them to exercise and relax in the hot summer. Furthermore, the Company held the “NWDS‧Soccer Fever” retweeting activity from 15 to 30 June on NWDS CSR Weibo to spread the spirit of volunteering and recorded an overwhelming participation of over 66,000 people.
Ms. Rebecca Woo, Corporate Affairs Director and Chairman of Sustainability Steering Committee of NWDS, said, “The theme of this year’s ‘Volunteer Month’ is all about soccer. All NWDS volunteers, regardless of their gender and sporty level, enjoyed the activity and the interaction with children a lot. Many volunteers expressed that children’s smiley faces swipe their work stress away. Also, we invited media to join the activity to experience volunteering and take care of the children as ‘big brothers’ and ‘big sisters’. Although this year’s ‘Volunteer Month’ ended, the Company pledges to continue to promote volunteer culture within the Company as well as to spread our love and care to society.”
