(15 July 2010 – Hong Kong) New World Department Store China Limited (“NWDS” or the “Company”; Hong Kong stock code: 825), one of the largest owners and operators of department stores in the PRC, is pleased to announce that the “Used Book Donation Campaign” was carried out successfully in all NWDS’s stores in June. More than 70,000 books were donated to schools and charitable organizations such as Red Cross, Hope School, Youth Development Foundation of Hubei Province and China Environmental protection Foundation. The overwhelming response shows a growing awareness of environmental protection of our customers.
To preserve the Earth and raise public awareness of environmental protection, all 35 NWDS’s stores organized “Used Book Donation Campaign” from early June to 13 June, encouraging customers to deliver the used books to NWDS’s stores. Participants who donated used books to NWDS’s stores could receive a gift voucher of NWDS or a special gift while VIP and Platinum VIP members would also be eligible for additional benefits or awards during the period of the campaign.
Stores in Central China donated the books to Hope School and established “New World Reading Corner”, which provides opportunities to youngsters who thirst for knowledge, helping them to lift their horizon. To further publicize environmental protection and involve more people to participate in the campaign, 5 NWDS’s stores in Wuhan inaugurated the opening ceremony of “Used Book Donation Campaign” with the athletic activity named “Who is the King of Kid” held on 1st June, Children’s Day. Nanjing New World Department Store and Ningbo New World Department Store launched the campaign in several schools with encouraging result, attracting a number of students to participate in the activity. Besides, Chongqing New World Department Store successfully liaised with Chongqing Publication Limited to donate over 2,000 new books to underprivileged children. One of the customers of Nanjing New World Department Store donated more than 400 books personally, fully demonstrating the benevolence of our customers. In addition, stores promoted the campaign through various channels, such as newspaper, internet, instore broadcasting, SMS and posters, providing information to customers comprehensively.
Mr. Adrian Cheng, Executive Director of NWDS, the Chief of this “Used Book Donation Campaign” said, “NWDS strives to be the pioneer in the industry, we devote considerable resources to environmental conservation and community services whilst providing customers with an unprecedented shopping environment. This meaningful campaign not only demonstrated our commitment to protecting the environment, but also cultivated a reading atmosphere by providing more learning opportunities to children. In addition to the dedicated support of customers, our staffs also enthusiastically supported the campaign by donating numerous books. At the same time, the staffs of Changsha New World Trendy Plaza donated more than 2,000 pieces of clothing to the victims after noticing the floods in Hunan Province, embodying the give-and-take spirit of NWDS by helping those in need. Moreover, comparing to normal days, traffic of the stores was increased during the implementation of the campaign, and the result of some stores was very encouraging with more than 30% increased in traffic. In future, NWDS will hold more charitable and environmental activities in order to contribute to the community as well as spreading the message of love.”
