Environmental Protection has always been a core task in the Group's sustainable development agenda. The Company executed various green measures on operations level, including recycling and reuse of disposable items, reduction of food waste and energy conservation. On the other hand, we encouraged our staff and customers to adopt green lifestyle by taking part in environmental protection activities supported or initiated by the Group.
In September 2014, NWDS held its fourth nationwide environmental activity, “Green Mid-Autumn Festival – Moon Cake Box Recycling Campaign”, and utilized both online and offline channels to carry out the promotions, as a result, collecting nearly 3,600 moon cake boxes successfully, totaling over 22,000 boxes over the years. This year, the first-ever “Moon Cake Box Creative Design Competition” was held to encourage the public to create arts and crafts from idle moon cake boxes in an attempt to further disseminate the message of resources regeneration. The competition received about 420 entries and over 2,600 people casted their votes through physical stores and NWDS CSR Weibo, successfully promoting waste recycling.
Committed to environmental protection, NWDS has supported World Wide Fund For Nature’s “Earth Hour” for five consecutive years. From 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on 29 March 2014, 42 NWDS stores across Mainland China and Hong Kong Office turned off all neon lights, billboard lights, signage lights and unnecessary lights for an hour to demonstrate our commitment to combat climate change and help build a light pollution free environment.
In support of the United Nations’ World Environment Day, we launched the third “Go Green with NWDS” campaign in early June 2014, which engaged nearly 30,000 customers. All of them wore green garments or accessories to demonstrate their commitment to preserve the planet. We gave away over 5,200 free potted plants to consumers, which was 39% more than the previous year, to carry forward the greening to their homes.
