Environmental Protection has always been a core task in the Group's sustainable development agenda. The Company executed various green measures on operations level, including recycling and reuse of disposable items, reduction of food waste and energy conservation. On the other hand, we encouraged our staff and customers to adopt green lifestyle by taking part in environmental protection activities supported or initiated by the Group.
To further spread the green message to the public, Wuhan stores joined hands to launch the “Beautiful New World • Walk Green – 2013 Walkathon” on 17 November 2013. Volunteers picked up garbage along the peripheral of East Lake in Wuhan and promoted care for the nature to visitors so as to build a green civilized community.
The “Clear Weather, Refreshing Stores” campaign was launched in all NWDS stores in December 2013. We called upon customers, employees and the community to say no to smog and take prompt actions to improve air quality. During the campaign, nature experiential areas were set up in all stores, while entrances and sitting areas were decorated with potted plants and vertical greening. There were also small potted plants at concessionaire counters to absorb air-borne hazardous substances, creating a green shopping environment for customers.
To promote green office environment and paperless operation, Hong Kong New World Department Store – Shanghai Chengshan Branch Store organized two office automation system training sessions in September 2013. The courses included demonstration video, presentations by professionals and practical exercises to enable colleagues to quickly familiarize with the system. Automation is a good way to improve office efficiency and lessen printing demand, therefore, it plays an important role in reducing the carbon footprint associated with office operation.
